Bear Lake History - Native American Indian lore tells the story of how Bear Lake got its name in the late 1700's. During the early spring a mother bear and her cub were crossing the frozen lake and the mother fell through the thawing ice, drowning and leaving behind her young cub, which survived. In the summer, the mother bear's body was recovered and the lake was given its name out of respect for the bear's spirit.
